In recent years at least six big container ships have been seriously damaged by major fires or explosions. Apart from the loss of life and injury to seafarers, each accident caused millions of dollars of damages. Experts attribute most of these incidents to hazardous materials that were loaded into containers but not declared to the carriers.
Speaking at the Intermodal Transport & Logistics Conference in Rotterdam earlier in this month perishable trade expert and consultant to TT Club, David Heather made clear the necessity for operators dealing with the transport of perishables to adopt more disciplined loss prevention strategies.

TT Club, a leading transport insurance provider, has confirmed that its latest assessment of claims resulting from Typhoon Maemi, the devastating storm that hit South Korea on 26 September, is substantially reduced from the initial estimates of US$40-50 million, with the likely level of claims faced by the mutual not expected to exceed US$25 million.

From 1st August 2003 he takes up the new position of Regional Underwriting Manager for the Asia-Pacific region, while also retaining responsibility for the Club's Indian Subcontinent business.

It is aimed at encouraging training in forwarding and enlarging the professional experience of the candidates. The Award is open to young freight forwarders whose age will not be greater than 30 in the competition year and they must have been working full-time in forwarding for at least two years.

1. Dangers from "Unknown" Shippers in Lahore, Pakistan
Mr Zahid Mehmood, the Manager of Star Logistics International, freight forwarders in Lahore, has sent us the following item on the dangers of accepting consignments from "unknown" shippers. "I read your TT Talk Edition regularly and I wish to share an incident with you, which I have seen at Lahore Airport. Please also share this with your readers so that they can also be careful about booking freight from "unknown" shippers.
